Transitions – Moving to Opportunity!

Transitions – Moving to Opportunity!

I started coaching a “candidate in transition.” It is like looking in a mirror 5 years ago. After 30+ years at a company – a senior executive was exited. No role for them. After 30+ years of great performance – “new management” has decided there is “nothing” this individual can contribute? Yes, part of me once again is experiencing those feelings of anger and frustration – but the bigger part feels relief and opportunity. And that is how this candidate is choosing to move forward. Moving to Opportunity! She knows there will be a roller coaster of emotions – but she is open to the opportunities of her “next chapter” in life. She is building her quilt as she wants...

Exploring Bright Hopes

Exploring Bright Hopes

This weekend I followed “spelunkers” and explored Kartchner Caverns in southern Arizona. As we entered through the air tight steel doors securing the caves and navigated the dimly lit paths we could only imagine what Randy Tufts and Gary Tenen felt as they found this treasure in 1974. I felt as if I were navigating an Irish chain quilt block as we traversed the walkways and found our way to the spectacular formations, then back to single opening for humans. (The bats still use the sinkhole.) There is a quilt block design called Bright Hopes. The discovery of Kartchner Caverns was one of such joy and bright hope regarding it’s preservation for posterity. It has become an...

Moving – a new block in my life quilt

How does a physical move from one house to another change us? My husband and I have returned to our Arizona home – departing the Midwest after 4 years. A sense of calm swept me when I saw the brown and red tones of the desert. When did the desert become “home?” Sometime in the past 25 years – but no date springs to mind. A strength and sense of “I can do anything” envelopes me in this dry, dusty, yet stunning landscape. Where are you when you feel strongest? What space do you occupy when you are most “at home?” I reflected on my strongest senses of “home.” They began with “home” on a farm in rural...

4th of July Memories

The 4th of July Holiday is a memorable block in my personal life quilt.  The Star Spangled Banner takes me back to a 4th of July at the American University in Cairo, Egypt. My husband and  I were overseas for the first time in our lives. After a year in Egypt we had Oscar Meyer hot dogs with Heinz ketchup and Oreo cookies.  Pure treasures from home – and reminders that in America we were free to purchase such treats every day.  When the Marine Band marched in playing Stars and Stripes Forever – I thought my heart would burst.  Until that time I never realized how much it meant to be an American. More recent July 4ths have involved sitting on the roof of our house...

Is a door or window opening for you?

Is a door or window opening for you?

I often hear from clients that “things just seem to happen,” and I “fell into” a job.  If you look at the event from 180 degrees, what part of that decision did you own? Our son is about to embark on a 3 month adventure to work in Australia.  When he was offered the position, his first instincts were –  “I have so many projects to finish”… “Who will take care of the house?” But then he said to himself, “I’M GOING TO AUSTRALIA!”  That window of opportunity opened and he is jumping through. What doors or windows are open just a crack that you can push wide open and jump through?  ...

Spring – fresh beginnings – renewing your spirit!

It is Spring in the Midwest. The tulips are blooming, pastel colors abound and rain seems wash everything clean. What a perfect time for a Spring View of your life quilt! What blocks in your quilt represent tolerations that you can let go of this year? Which blocks have seeds just starting to grow or perhaps they have fresh blooms – new adventures or goals for you to pursue? What will you do to nourish them?
